Updated October 23, 2026, by the Rillow team. We make Rillow, an SEO data server for AI agents, and it is one of the six tools here, ranked by the same criteria as the others. There are no affiliate links, and we checked every price on the maker's own site that day.

For most people, the best Surfer SEO alternative is NeuronWriter. It does the same core job, scoring a draft against the pages that rank in Google, from $23 a month, against $119 a month for Surfer's Standard plan. Frase is the pick if you want briefs and AI drafts for one site, and Content Harmony if you hand briefs to writers. If you write with an AI agent such as Claude Code, Rillow gives the agent the brief instead of giving you an editor.

Why people look for a Surfer SEO alternative

Surfer is a content optimization tool. It reads the pages that rank for your keyword and scores your draft on how well it covers the same ground. People leave it for three reasons:

  • Price. Surfer's Standard plan, the cheapest with its content editor, costs $119 a month billed monthly, or $99 a month billed yearly, per Surfer's pricing page on October 23, 2026. Monthly billing covers 30 documents a month.
  • A new focus. Surfer has moved to surfer.ai, and its pricing page now leads with AI search visibility. Its cheapest plan, at $82 a month billed yearly, tracks how AI answers mention your brand and doesn't include the content editor.
  • Cost per article. For a site that publishes a few posts a month, most of the 30 documents go unused. The second result in Google for "surfer seo alternative" is a Reddit thread on r/bigseo asking for exactly that: a cheaper option.

If you only use Surfer for its free Keyword Surfer Chrome extension, you don't need an alternative. Keyword Surfer is still free.

How we ranked them

We ranked each tool on four things you can check yourself:

  • Price of the first paid plan, billed monthly, from the maker's own pricing page on October 23, 2026.
  • What that plan covers: how many articles, briefs or documents a month.
  • A way to try it before you pay: a free plan or trial.
  • Fit for one site and a small team, since that is who Surfer is often too expensive for.

We left out tools that have moved away from content work. Scalenut's pricing page, for example, now sells AI visibility tracking.

1. NeuronWriter, best for a cheaper content editor

Price: $23 a month on the Bronze plan, or $230 a year, per NeuronWriter's pricing page.

NeuronWriter does what most people use Surfer for. You enter a keyword, it reads the top results, and its editor scores your draft on the terms, headings and length the ranking pages share. Bronze covers 2 projects and 25 documents a month. API and MCP access, for connecting an AI agent, start on the Gold plan at $69 a month.

Drawbacks: Bronze has no API or MCP, and 25 documents a month is the cap.

Best for: a blogger or small business that wants Surfer's content score for about a fifth of the price.

2. Frase, best for briefs and drafts on one site

Price: Starter is $49 a month, or $39 a month billed yearly, per Frase's pricing page. There is a 7-day free trial with no credit card.

Frase researches the top results, builds a brief and writes an AI draft you then edit and score. Starter covers 1 seat, 1 site, 10 articles a month and 50 audit pages a month.

Drawbacks: 10 articles a month is the cap on Starter, and the next plan, Professional, is $129 a month.

Best for: a founder or freelancer who wants research, a brief and a first draft in one place.

3. Content Harmony, best for briefs you hand to writers

Price: $50 a month for 5 content workflows, or about $42 a month billed yearly, per Content Harmony's pricing page. A $10 trial gives you 10 workflows with no time limit.

Each content workflow in Content Harmony includes a keyword report, a content brief and a content grader for one page. Pricing depends only on how many pages you produce a month, and every plan has unlimited users and projects.

Drawbacks: the price rises with every extra page you publish, and 5 workflows a month is a small allowance.

Best for: a small team that writes briefs for freelance writers and grades what comes back.

4. Rillow (ours), best if you write with an AI agent

Price: free to start with 30 credits and no credit card. Solo is $19 a month or $190 a year, with 100 credits a month. One credit is 10 cents of data.

Rillow isn't a content editor. It is an SEO data server that you connect to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI or claude.ai. When your agent asks Rillow for a brief, it gets the keyword's volume and difficulty, Google's top 10 with each page's word count and headings, Google's AI answer and the sites it cites, People Also Ask and a writing guide. Your agent writes the post. When it saves the post, Rillow checks the keyword placement, title and description length, headings, internal links and alt text, and, for a list like this one, that the page has a comparison table, a ranking method and an FAQ. This post went through those checks. Our setup page shows how to connect each agent.

Drawbacks: there is no term-by-term content score like Surfer's, and it only makes sense if you already work in an AI agent.

Best for: founders who build with Claude Code, Codex or Cursor and want the agent to research and write from real data. Our Claude SEO guide covers that setup.

5. Clearscope, best for large editorial teams

Price: Essentials is $129 a month, per Clearscope's pricing page, with a 14-day free trial.

Clearscope grades drafts on how well they cover a topic. Essentials covers 50 pages and 20 drafts a month, and it also tracks how ChatGPT and Gemini mention your brand.

Drawbacks: it costs more than Surfer, so it is not the pick if price is why you're leaving.

Best for: content teams that publish a lot and can spend more than Surfer costs.

6. MarketMuse, best for content strategy on large sites

Price: a free plan with 10 queries a month. Paid plans are sold through a demo, with no public price on MarketMuse's pricing page.

MarketMuse plans what to write across a whole site: which topics you cover, where the gaps are, and briefs for new pages. Its paid plans start with Optimize, which includes 100 tracked topics and 5 content briefs a month.

Drawbacks: no public price, and it is built for sites with many pages.

Best for: larger sites that need a content plan more than a draft editor.

Frequently asked questions

None of the tools we checked has a free plan with a full content editor. MarketMuse has a free plan with 10 queries a month, Surfer's own Keyword Surfer extension is free for search volumes, and Content Harmony's $10 trial gives you 10 full workflows with no time limit.

Surfer's content editor is paid, from $99 a month billed yearly. Keyword Surfer, its Chrome extension that shows search volumes and keyword ideas on Google's results page, is free.

NeuronWriter, at $23 a month for 25 documents, is the cheapest content editor we found. Rillow costs $19 a month, but it gives an AI agent SEO data and briefs rather than an editor.

For most small sites, it does the same job for much less: it scores drafts against the ranking pages from $23 a month. Surfer has more AI visibility features, such as tracking how AI answers mention your brand, which matter more to larger teams.

Not on their own, because they can't see Google's current results or search volumes. Connected to SEO data through an MCP server, an agent like Claude Code can read the top pages, write a brief and draft the post, which covers much of what Surfer is used for.
